MICHIGAN PROJECT FOR INFORMED PUBLIC POLICY (MPIPP)

One of the ongoing initiatives of the Michigan Psychological Association Foundation (MPAF) is the Michigan Project for Informed Public Policy (MPIPP).

Goal

The goal of MPIPP is to help ensure equality for Michigan's LGBT citizens by reducing discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identification.

In order to meet this goal, MPIPP provides psychological and social science information about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) issues based on cumulative scientific research rather than competing political ideologies.

MPIPP addresses issues such as the mental health consequences of workplace discrimination, hate crimes, harassment of LGBT people in schools and communities, and "conversion" therapy. MPIPP also provides research-based information on LGBT families, including LGBT youth, same-sex parenting, and marriage equality issues.

Through its affiliation with national partners such as the American Psychological Association and the Rockway Institute at Alliant University and many other state and local organizations, MPIPP is able to provide science-based information and education and bring a coordinated focus to these human issues.

In addition, MPIPP has a network of more than 150 volunteers including social scientists and mental health professionals from every geographic area of Michigan.

Funding

MPIPP's work is funded primarily by a grant from the Arcus Foundation to the Michigan Psychological Association Foundation (MPAF). Personal donations are also accepted.
